Ninety-five percent of nursing homes are free-standing facilities only five percent of nursing homes are located within hospitals. Seventy-percent of those nursing homes are for-profit only twenty-four percent are non-profit. CMS: Ref: QSO 21-06-NH – Updates to the Nursing Home Compare website and Five Star Quality Rating System. There are over 15,500 nursing homes in the United States that are certified to provide care to Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries (92% of the nursing homes are certified by both), which provide care for approximately 1.3 million residents every day.
To update the quality measures, CMS will use data based on the data collection period ending June 30, 2020. Therefore, the quality measures posted on the Nursing Home Compare website and used in the Five Star Quality Rating System will be updated on January 27, 2021. CMS also analyzed the data used to support the claims-based quality measures, and similarly, found no issues updating these measures. Since nursing homes have continued to submit MDS data, the data can be used to update quality measures without any issues. But they noted that while the timeframes for submitting data were waived, nursing homes have still been submitting the required data. Note: In a memo on December 4, 2020, CMS outlined how they had waived the timeframes that facilities are required to submit resident assessment information through the Minimum Data Set (MDS) per 42 CFR 483.20.
